| Where is Rossendale? |
| On old maps of Lancashire there is an area in East Lancashire designated as The Forest of Rossendale. The forest and its wild deer disappeared hundreds of years ago but those times live on especially in pub names such as The Roebuck Inn and The Deerplay Inn. During the Industrial Revolution the three main towns of Rossendale - Bacup, Rawtenstall and Haslingden - were thriving cotton mill towns but those days of spinning and weaving are also gone forever. With the River Irwell springing from the ground just north of Bacup, this once-polluted river has recently seen the return of fish and long-departed waterbirds to its waters. The East Lancashire area is still blessed with some wonderful scenery and the people are very friendly to strangers. |
